Standing Tall
The Nature of Wood
These images were the created in response to a study of the properties and nature of wood.

I collected discarded wood and chose these three pieces to create a sculpture using only balance, the temporary nature of the sculpture was designed to reflect the short life of wood  in its living form in comparison with other materials.

The top of the three pieces when found had survived a fire and I cleaned away much of the burnt material from the surface. This revealed what remained underneath and demonstrated the transformation and decay of wood that is often observed.

The sculpture was then photographed against a concrete wall that had been left to suffer in the elements. This provided not only a stark contrast in materials which impacts the viewer visually but also a statement that materials we may view as long lasting are in fact quite temporary also.
