Should I Grow Cannabis Indoors Or Outdoors?

As a first-time cultivator, your first few questions will likely be, “What are the pros and cons if I grow cannabis indoors or outdoors? What are the key considerations in both methods of cannabis cultivation?” Here are a few things to consider when deciding which venue will produce the best crop in your case.

General Cultivation Requirements

Regardless of whether cannabis is cultivated indoors or outdoors, the following are the general requirements for a successful harvest.

Commercial potting soil with the right nutrient balance (e.g., nitrogen, phosphorus and potassium) is recommended unless aeroponics or hydroponics is used.  Fertilizers can be added during the flowering stage but extreme caution is a must since fertilizer burn is always a risk. pH level should be between 5.9 and 6.5 with adjustments, when necessary especially when commercial fertilizers are added (i.e., fertilizers can result in higher soil acidity).

Light sources can be either natural sunlight or artificial light. Temperature levels in either case should be between 24°C to 30°C for optimum growth and THC potency.

Water should be administered via a plant spray bottle to avoid a waterlogged growing medium, which will result in wilting of the leaves, even in killing the young plants.

You can also ask your stoner friends for more general tips about cannabis cultivation but, at the end of the day, you have to adopt a trial-and-error method for your first crop.

Outdoor Cultivation

You can successfully grow cannabis outdoors by keeping these tips in mind:

Choose strains suitable for outdoor cultivation, such as Indica-based strains since these have quick maturing time, heavy yields, and short stature. Many cultivators also prefer Sativa strains because of their better light response.

Plant either on natural soil or in pots containing commercial soil (i.e., pre-made soil can even be secured from your stoner friends).

Select areas with at least 12 hours of sunlight a day.

Plant the seeds either in mid-April, late May, or early June if you live in the Northern Hemisphere since it will provide four to nine months of optimum growth. Mid-September and early October are the typical harvest times.

You have to be careful in outdoor cannabis cultivation as state and local laws may consider it a crime.

Indoor Cultivation

You may also choose indoor cultivation in case outdoor cultivation has its impracticalities. Keep in mind that while you have near-complete control of the growing environment, you will find indoor cannabis cultivation to be more complicated and costly.

Most cannabis strains can be grown indoors faster with 24-hour light, controlled humidity, and added atmospheric carbon dioxide. These can also be cultivated via hydroponics.

Provide the plants with a growing medium as well as light, air, water and nutrients. Be sure to have a balance between light and dark periods using different types of light; a balance of warmer days and cooler nights; and right levels of carbon dioxide using various means like bottled CO2.

Ultimately, it doesn’t matter whether you grow cannabis indoors or outdoors for as long as you have the passion to learn its ins and outs.
