student renovation project 2016, first year of master degree
KU Leuven, Belgium
Leuven, Belgium
The focus of the renovation design studio was a conversion of a bacteriology institute situated on the edge of the former old city wall of a Belgian city Leuven. Leuven, as the oldest university city in Belgium is highly concentrated with students and young people, therefore with the new program of a community center, the former institute has a sustainable future.
The heritage building is surrounded by three different public spaces with different character and hierarchy. A square in front of a monumental entrance, a narrow quiet street running along the northern façade and a semi private court- yard in the inner side of the block.
The visitor is immersed through the three different faces of the institute into an intensive interior space connecting them in the middle.
New structure in the middle of the two heritage buildings of former bacteriology institute represents the new entrance and function by showing the slope of the auditorium on its façade.
