During this collaboration between BMW and SCAD Collaborative Learning Center, the students were given the task of creating possible designs for the instrument cluster (IC) wireframes of the 2018 BMW models. The main concentration was given to the design of the instrument cluster wireframes with a few tentative looks for the central information display (CID). The CLC team was split into groups of three, and each team took a unique conceptual approach to screens. In the end, three separate sets of screens were delivered along with a process book.
The concepts that were delivered all depicted three different styles; old school, present, and future. The third concept that was presented to the BMW ambassador was called “One with Machine.” This concept took a more futuristic approach to the instrument cluster, drawing inspiration from science fiction films, like 2001 Space Odyssey, and imaginary technology, like Jarvis from the Iron Man films. The purpose of this design was to make the BMW driver feel like a “bad-ass.” Provide them with superior technology that is easy to navigate and at the same time, gives them some familiar components to connect them to current BMW models.
