The Awakenings was inspired by a fresh raw feeling of early spring. There is still chill in the air, but the winter melancholy is starting to lift. The early-blooming yulan magnolias - cultivated by Buddhist monks in as early as the T’ang Dynasty - were a perfect embodiment of spring. Having taken hundreds of photo references in Brooklyn Botanic Garden, I never could stop admiring the variety of forms, colors and moods that this gorgeous tree provides.
