Beijing Community Center

Air pollution is one of the major environmental issues facing Beijing, China. Beijing Community Center is a living architectural design that fights air pollution and changes the way the environmental and infrastructure interact. The design concept indicates various ways of FILTRATION: First, filters the body and mind; second, filters the perception between old and new; and last but not least, filters the air, water and light. Filtering human body and mind relies on the form and the courtyard as the mean to direct us toward nature in such a chaotic urban life. Secondly, the design filters the perception of old and new in which it expresses the idea of Feng-Shui through four distinctive ornaments: Flowers-Hung door, screen wall, veranda, and partition in abstract and simplify way. And last but not least, the curved pitched roof inspired from Chinese Siheyuan House, connecting different functional spaces together, is not only to reveal the complexity of this urban building but also be the key element in filtering air, water and light. The multi peaked roof is opened up to let the sun lights come in and to reveal three levels of courtyard, with glass interior walls and central escalator overlooking this wonderful, whimsical space.
