Matisse - exploration in contour line drawing

Henri Matisse, a French artist started painting in 1889 and continued to study it in 1891. He started painting in a traditional flemish style that produced dark, subtle and gloomy images. As he developed and evolved as a painter and an artist he studied contemporary art and became a rule breaker when it came to the norm of art at the time. Already having established himself and being known as a respectable artist, Matisse was able to explore the depth of his field and push his artistry to extremes.

Matisse is one of the biggest influencers of my own artistry especially when it comes to still life drawing and capturing the movement in a still image. When he drew his eyes and his hands were connected and they worked together to translate reality into a beautifully crafted and simplistic representation.
Even when adding colours he uses abnormal and off colours to abstract forms while also retaining their natural qualities.
