Arc Tables
modular table system, 2012
Anyone who knows me can tell you I am a bit of a furniture nut. Lately there's been this Mad Men-inspired nostalgia for mid-century design. My fascination with that era started long before, spending Saturday afternoons at my grandparents' house. To this day, their home still serves as inspiration for me.
With this set, I definitely pulled from my personal mid-century love affair, but with a subtle yet distinct return-to-modern-day touch. Look closely and you'll see carefully considered tapers and chamfers giving the simplest of geometric forms a bit more finish.
Some of my initial sketches were too busy, and were trying too hard to do too much. I kept coming back to the low, open coffee table as the signature piece. It was simple, clean and above all, functional.
The addition of drawers and shelves challenged the call for clean and simple. It was important to keep the system modular, not just a collection with a lot of different pieces. Maintaining the same legs keeps costs down. Same thing for symmetrical connectors and common hardware.
This console table is my favorite "piece" in the collection. I love the contrast of the rich wood grain with the milky white. There is something familiar about the proportions. It just feels right. And I can't help but want to throw a few magazines on the wire shelf.
