In my time at OARnet, I developed client network diagrams to help display how the internet network was connected to schools and universities throughout Ohio. Each map was based on the main backbone router that existed on OARnet's network in a specific city. In the case above, the backbone router was located in Akron. The map then displays every client device that connects to that specific router.
I had developed a key for each different device as well as each different type service and link that existed between devices. And, links between devices are color coordinated based on the amount of traffic the cable can hold.
These maps helped the engineers quickly see how each device in the network connects, and it also helped OARnet's clients easily see how they specifically are connected to OARnet's backbone.
