The Society of the Spectacle
My ideas are a synthesis of pictorial and psychological material from imagination, books, travel, and conversations, and are informed by my observation of human nature in life and the news.
I am inspired by observations that amuse me or that compel me to reflect on the bittersweet nature of the human condition, and ask questions ‘what if...’, ‘what happens when...’ and so the narrative evolves and drives the work to completion. The resulting paintings are of intimate and private worlds where conventional reality is transformed by hidden forces and people are seen to play out their power games, and like everyday experiences, the narratives remain open to the viewer’s interpretation because we don’t know and we can never know the combination of events and beliefs that lead to the particulalr snapshot of society we are seeing.
The works in 'the society of the spectacle' convey and play with complex opposing human traits such as fragility and strength, the innocuous and the sinister - with what we hide and reveal. These works incorporate large empty spaces, and like music, where the silent spaces between notes are integral to the nature of the piece being listened to, these spaces provide a resting place for the eye and hopefully a visual melody to the work.
