My roomate Yuansu had long beautiful straight black hair, which she one day decided to cut of with a pair of kitchen scissors. I talked to her about it as i helped neaten her new haircut, and she was very impersonal and didn't really give it much thought. This i found to be empowering in a small, but powerful way.

 

In this animation, i wanted to explore beauty ideals in the feminine world. Many women are in continuous pursuit for their version of external beauty.. and i find that the growth of our hair is a representation of that long and arduous entanglement. The film involves composite film footage, cel animation in Photoshop, as well as keyframe animation in Adobe After Effects.

 

I also had the opportunity to work with a freelance Sound Designer from Russia which was an awesome experience!

In this project, i wanted to try rotoscope cel animation. I booked a green room in the digital media building and got my roomate to do some acting for me. I brought that footage into Photoshop and redesigned and applied textures.
