BREXIT: can the center hold?
On 23 June 2016 voters in the United Kingdom chose to leave the European Union. The victory was narrow. The vote is non-binding. Already there are calls for another vote because the margin of victory was less than 10 percent. Some say the EU is moribund if not already dead. Can the center hold? Irish poet William Butler Yeats said it aptly nearly a century ago:
Turning and turning in the widening gyre
The falcon cannot hear the falconer;
Things fall apart; the centre cannot hold;
Mere anarchy is loosed upon the world,
The blood-dimmed tide is loosed, and everywhere
The ceremony of innocence is drowned;
The best lack all conviction, while the worst
Are full of passionate intensity.

A gaze blank and pitiless as the sun,
Is moving its slow thighs, while all about it
Wind shadows of the indignant desert birds.
Surely the Second Coming is at hand.
The Second Coming! Hardly are those words out
