Individualized Places of Care
Client: Herman Miller Healthcare
Project: Individualized Places of Care, Poster for NeoCon 2016
Art Director: Amber Fritcher-Tippet

Project Brief
Places of care should be as unique as the people who work in them, the people who heal in them, and the people who visit them. So what’s your ideal place of care?
1. In my initial sketch I wanted to emphasize the importance of modular elements in a healthcare environment, as well as the importance of natural elements.

2. In Photoshop I tried inverting the wall mask to see what it would look like with the nature scene I had initially illustrated showing through the walls. I liked this approach more as it emphasized my larger point of having natural elements as part of the healing process. I sent this version to the client and they really liked the direction of it. One of the Art Directors mentioned:
"I like the cutouts in the second option too – don't think it even needs furniture or the person myself? I like the windows and doors to indicate the natural coming inside (from out).”

3. I decided to try his suggestion and found that it worked well. I didn't need to include people or furniture to fully convey my concept. Moving forward I removed the balloon in the top right, got rid of the picture frame, removed everything from the window and door shapes, and added some saturated rings around the sun to emphasize the importance of natural light.

“Inside/Out” by Mike Ellis
Finding solace in the sights and sounds of nature can be very healing. An ideal place of care is one that is open with bright natural light and is modular to fit individual needs. One that allows for healing in a reflective and inclusive space.
