ISBN: Matchbox Project

The starting point for this project was a randomly selected ISBN number, which are numbers used to identify books. My selected ISBN number turned out to be Women and the Vote by Jad Adams. This led me into a journey of looking at Feminist art, such as the works of Judy Chicago and the Guerilla Girls. Also I delved into the history of women's suffrage, when I found out about the propaganda posters opposing women's suffrage. These posters were highly sexist and based a lot on stereotypes of women, which I found funny in a way because of how ignorant it seemed.
I felt quite strongly against these sexist attitudes so I decided to mock them in a sarcastic way, because it's just ridiculous to think of women in this way. I decided to write female stereotypes on pieces of toast, a symbol of stereotypical home life as the wife stays in the kitchen making any food the husband wishes.

Another key element of this project was that the outcome needed to be either matchbox-sized or fit in a matchbox so I had to take photos of the toast I made so I could fit them in the matchbox, which means you have to really focus in to read all the messages on the toast.
The ten pieces of toast, almost like the ten commandments for women.
