Hancrafted Stickleigh Chair

Modern Stickley Morris Chair
Custom Design & Build
The design intent was to modernize the classic craftsman-style furniture aesthetic. My piece has similar lines to that of a traditional Stickley Morris Chair, yet I tried to update certain aspects to maintain relevance.

I put together some rough sketches, then applied proper measurements (human factors) for this type of lounge chair. Then the fun began, selecting materials. I knew I wanted the piece to feel solid, something that would withstand the tests of time, but also something that felt rich and inviting. I decided on American Black Walnut. Thus began the 4 week long journey of trial and error (thankfully not many errors) of building my first lounge chair. I knew I didn't want to use nails or screws, and learned more than I could have imagined about furniture joinery. After everything was glued together, I did a final sanding and then applied 3 coats of danish oil. For the cushions, I chose to upholster with reclaimed burlap and natural cotton fabrics, as opposed to the traditional craftsman leather. The piece de resistance is the molded plastic panel adorning the back of the chair, which has a brushed metal finish. It offers an unexpected element and, in my opinion, plays a crucial part of the overall modern feel.
