Saint Timon, done as a commision. I decided to go for byzantine style - and since the "Macedonian Renaissance" (Xth-XIth century) is the only period in byzantine art I'm able to tell apart, the choice of inspirations was obvious.
The overall composition of the piece, as well as Timon's pose, were taken more or less directly from Timon's portrait from Menologion of Basil I (c. 1000 AD). Despite extensive research, I couldn't tell how rigid was the convention when painting saints in that era, so I chose to be faithful to the original, just in case.
Still, this is not a copy. Everything except general concept and composition - so color scheme, architecture, border ornaments, character's face and clothes - was put together by me, drawing stylistically from many different byzantine sources of the era, with the Paris Psalter (c. 950 AD) being the key inspiration.
