While studying sustainable bespoke shoemaking with Anne Marika Verpolegh Chasse, I struggled with hand welting techniques. While wet-molding the soles in preparation for welting, however, I noticed that the steel lasting nails were staining the damp leather when they were left in contact with each other overnight. Inspired by the idea of combining my training as a metalsmith with my passion for shoemaking, I developed a process for using iron oxides to color vegetable tanned leather and created this pair of minimal slip-ons using all-natural materials and dyes.
