ISTD Nobel Prize Brief
'Political Dynamite'

Awarded Merit in the 'International Society of Typographic Designers' 2016 Student Assessment.

Brief:
Design a typographic publication in print or digital format that details part of the history of The Nobel Prize. Explore various opportunities to contextualise your subjects and their work e.g. consider biographical, literary, social, cultural and historical reference points to inform visual content and typographic interpretation.

Solution:
The term ‘political dynamite’ is used in politics to describe someone or something that may cause controversy, such as starting an argument. As well as founding The Nobel Prize, Alfred Nobel controversially invented dynamite.

Political Dynamite shows the contrast between the literal and figurative definitions of dynamite by documenting a range of laureates whose award is steeped in political intrigue, both directly and indirectly.

Specifications:
36 pages, Japanese binding. Digitally printed on Winsor Newton Sand stock. Front and Back Cover on BFK printmaking paper. The dimensions of the publication (230x350mm) are the exact same as the diploma awarded to each laureate. Gold and Blue are the two main colours, with tints of each used throughout. Gold indicates the opulence of the ceremony as well as the medals. Tones of dark blue are used to illustrate the darker underbelly of the prize.
