WoodsWork Logo Project

This is a speculative logo created for WoodsWork, a youth-led summer mission trip hosted by Woods Memorial Presbyterian Church. Every year around June, 150 high school students travel to a different city in the United States to build three houses in partnership with Habitat for Humanity.

This project is close to my heart because when in high school I went on all four trips and served on the planning committee, in the band, as a work group leader and designed the t-shirts. This trip has had a profound impact on the person I have become. The program has been going strong for nearly thirty years so I thought it was time that it had an official logo. I plan to present my logo after this year’s trip and from there they can do with it what they like.

The logo, available in black and white, Woods blue (taken straight from the Woods Memorial Presbyterian Church website) or blaze orange tries to capture the ideals of WoodsWork. The blaze orange option speaks to the construction aspect of the trip. The logo shows the silhouettes of two crossed hammers surrounded by a house shape. Note that the overlap of the hammers creates a heart in the negative space. The intersection of the hammers can also be viewed as a cross and highlights the Christian focus of the mission trip. Plus, WoodsWorkers “high-five” each other all the time by clinking their hammers together. The hammers, the boldest part of the logo, hold up the house and give the logo a sense of stability and strength. Finally the heart, which represents love, is created by the hard work of the high schoolers and families who are to receive the homes. The house contains Christ, strength and love.

My logo which is crisp and simple embodies the ideals of WoodsWork summarized in the mock creative brief: “Hardworking, Focused, Community of Faith.” Had I actually been hired by Woods Church the creative brief would have been the first deliverable item in the logo design process. The purpose is to streamline thoughts and make sure that everyone agrees on the goals of my design.

Aside from the logo and creative brief I also created a mock magazine layout on the release of the new logo and a style guide describing the “dos” and “don’ts” so that the logo might be used properly. Because it was created in Adobe Illustrator as a vector image, the logo can be scaled to any size. If you are interested in my creative process, ( a LOT of thumbnailing went into this project) please feel free to take a look at my Flickr album: https://flic.kr/s/aHskEWkQer Thank you for checking out my project!
