Google Search Project

Project goal

What is everything that happens in the process of searching and gathering of information before and after you visit google.com, type in a query and look at the results? Can Google help formulating a query, discerning contextual relevance of results, and remembering the information you acquire?

The project has launched as: https://www.google.com/bookmarks/l

Role on the project

I was the lead interaction designer on an experimental search productat Google. Working with a team of about twenty engineers in the Seattleoffice, I was exploring what it means for search to become social.

Search Results page

On the Search Results page, in addition to regular Google results, there's a section of lists of results relevant to the query from the your social network. These lists were created by people searching for similar things in the past, published and ranked by Google.

SmartList page

This page is the main idea of the product. It's a list of links created either by you or by one of the people in your network. The list is ranked based on search relevance and social graph and appears in search results. The list is open to contributions from anyone in your social network; they can add links, comments and ratings. The list also dynamically brings in a map if it's a local result and pulls data about links in the list from Google Maps.
User Archetype

Based on data gathered in home visits in collaboration with user research, this is an archetype of a user for whom social Google search would be most relevant.
