THE DIA DE LOS MUERTOS FESTIVAL
Swinburne University of Technology project, creating promotional print products for 'The Dia De Los Muertos Festival'.

‘Dia De Los Muertos’ translation in English is Day of the Dead. It is a Mexican holiday that focuses on gatherings of family and friends to pray for and remember friends and family members who have died. The Dia De Los Muertos Festival held in Melbourne promoted themselves through posters and event pages on Facebook. They have no print based material to hand out to attract festival sponsors, food vendors or new festival attendees. The sugar skull is a decorative piece or offering used in rituals on the holiday. The vibrant colours and intricate detail of the skulls are featured as a common visual theme throughout each piece of this project. The printed booklet provides readers with enough background knowledge about Dia De Los Muertos and what the festival entails to feel encouraged to attend and even take part in the traditions. The website provides the same information as the booklet but also includes a ‘Gallery’ of images from past festivals. The promotional postcard has a brief description of the festival and also acts as a festival invitation for attendees to send to friends.
