Creative Process: Line/Value Blue Heron

INTRODUCTION

For my Design Foundation class, I was asked to find a high contrast black and white image and recreate it twice - once in soft pencil, to demonstrate an understanding of value created purely through shading, and once in ink to demonstrate an understanding of value created purely through lines. I chose an image of one of my favorite animals, the Great Blue Heron.

PREPARATION
For this I gathered my necessary materials
-Drawing pencils of varying hardness
-Micron drawing pens
-various sheets of paper
-a black and white photo of a blue heron.
STAGES

I first created a series of small thumbnails - including one of a Peregrine Falcon before I decided against using that bird - and then larger thumbnails, one each for the shading and line aspect of the project. Finally created full-size mockups of each picture.

FINAL WORK

In my final work I put together all the different ways I tried portrayng the light values of my Heron into a finished product that I considered to be my best attempt thus far.
CONCLUSION

I considered my final output to be a successful rendering of a blue heron in two different value styles while not sacrificing the look of the finished compostion.
