Aragonite - Laser Cut Pendant Lamp

Aragonite Lamp

13" Length, 13" Width, 16" Height

The Aragonite Lamp was created using purely algorithmic modeling and parametric design.  The algorithm (as pictured below) that created this lamp takes any closed shape and transforms it into a barnacle-covered geometric lamp.  This particular output is made up of approximately 150 laser cut pieces of 2.7 millimeter thick birch plywood.  On the interior, each piece is labeled with a unique number to help aid in the somewhat complex building process.

The lamp gets its name from the Aragonite mineral - a rock with a radial crystal structure that grows outward from a central point.

I designed this lamp as well as the algorithm that creates the lamp using Rhinoceros CAD software with Grasshopper, a plugin for parametric design.
