The brief was to design a book cover for 'Metamorphosis and Other Short Stories' by Franz Kafka. Franz Kafka was a famous Czech German-language writer of novels and short stories.
The book cover I have designed is based on the story 'metamorphosis', which means transformation. The story is about a young boy called Gregor Samsa who transforms into a large insect over night. Through a series of events and neglection from his family, Gregor passes away as a large insect, never to experience human life again.
The concept I created within my design is the notion of insects taking over Gregor's brain. As time goes on in the story Gregor has to accept that he is an insect and adapt to an 'insect' life. The illustration depicts the brain deteriorating and the insects forming mud tunnels as they dominante Gregor's brain and also his life as a human.
