Elk Sports Logo from Start to Finish

This page shows the various stages of my process to create a logo for a class project with
Adobe Illustrator CC 2016 for a high school in Enola, Arkansas.

The challenge to making a sports logo is to create a bold and compelling design that looks good in a variety of sizes and can be printed either monochromatically (with one ink) or with 2 or 3 inks.

The most successful designs appear to be well-balanced and dynamic in their lines, curves and shapes.

Also, sports logos must portray mascots as either confident or intimidating by using appropriate facial expressions and body language.

I found a photo that clearly shows the elk's skull structure from the antlers to the nose.
Next I drew some basic lines for the elk's main features.
Next I made a version with shapes.
Next I added two Pantone colors and a neck to the elk. I only added two colors to the black and white versions so that it would not be too expensive to print.
Here is what the logo would look like on a basketball uniform, basketball court and coffee mug.

I decided to add a gradient to the yellow areas.
