Stained Glass Window Layer Book

2D DESIGN - STAINED GLASS WINDOW LAYER BOOK

This was a project for my 2D Design Class. The objective was to come up with a theme to create a book of layered paper to make up a final design. Since I am an architecture major I wanted to incorporate a type of architectural theme. In the end I decided to go with the idea of 'Stained Glass'. For the overall design, with the idea of 'Stained Glass' you definitely can't forget Gothic architecture. I looked to the design of Gothic windows specifically, and studied different types of tracery (the ornamental stone work around the windows). I also studied various Gothic elements such as quatrefoils, arches and rosettes that you would find on Gothic stained glass windows. In the end I designed my own rosette template on Illustrator.

We were required to select a color scheme. In choosing the paper colors, I selected an analogous scheme of blues, purples, and into the dark reds.

With our papers we were encouraged to use textures (visual/physical), preferably related to our theme. So with my theme in mind, I looked for glass and although I thought of Gothic architecture, I also thought of the associations to Catholicism. In the end my papers were textured with different types of glass, one I attempted with acrylic to mimic stained glass and the others were prints of glass (like frosted in the type and literally frozen water on glass). I included prints of pages from illuminated manuscripts; one of a Latin text and the other of the famous Chi-Rho-Iota page in The Book of Kells. One page was also simply the chi-rho symbol stamped all over.

All pages were hand cut in design and to size, and bound together by me.
Finished layer book with all pages bound in order
