Narwhal Prosthetic

University of Minnesota
Sculpture Course

This is my first foam latex prosthetic.  The assignment for my class was to create a wearable sculpture, and I had been wanting to experiment with prosthetics, and it seemed like the perfect opportunity.  I have always been facinated by narwhals, because they seem more like mythical creatures than real animals.  I decided to transform myself into a lost narwhal princess without a kingdom.
The first thing I did was have the Teaching Assistant help make a life cast of my face from cream alginate.  I cast the positive in UltraCal 30, then used an oil-based clay to sculpt my narwhal piece.  It took me four or five tries to get the foam latex cast and cured properly, but it finally came out the proper consistancy!
Since it was only a face piece, I applied the prosthetic piece to my own face and painted it myself.  My once bright blue hair had slowly faded to the grey-ish, green-ish blue I had been hoping to get for this project.  All the styling and photography was done by me, in my apartment.
