Usagi and Her Bike Gang

Step 001:  Sketch phase!  This piece was inspired by Babs Tarr's phenomenal Bosozoku Sailor Scouts.  I thought of doing a cyclist spin on the idea.
Step 002:  I did some foldable bike research and modeled four roughly similar models of bikes in Blender.  Then I made a quick set that resembles an everyday San Franciscan corner cafe and positioned the bikes on it with the sketch overlayed on top  (not shown).  The bike placements didn't need to be exact, since I knew that the Sailor Scout's poses aren't final at this point.
Step 003:  With the bikes done,  I could more accurately finish their poses on the bikes in Photoshop.   Although, this still feels a bit floaty and they all don't seem to be standing on a single plane.
Step 004:  So, back to Blender to flesh out the background set and, more importantly,  added some cement tile lines on the sidewalk.  This helps a lot to have a guide on where everyone's supposed to stand with a better sense of perspective.  Those blurry marks on the cement are ambient occlusion shadows that I left on when I turned the bike layers off so I'd have markers where I'd put them back on when this goes back to Photoshop.
Step 005:  Brought everything together back in Photoshop!  Added some people in the cafe,  added some graffiti,  did a golden hour glow to the set,  pushed back some stuff and pulled some stuff in.  Thanks for checking out this step by step process on this 2d + 3d mashup exercise!  Be sure to check out my Society6 page, if you're interested in getting a print of it!  8)

Ever wondered how it would look if Sailor Moon was from SF and had a bicycle gang? Here's my take on it! 8)
