A homegrown community of artists called the Atis Résistants has been increasingly active in the Grande Rue neighborhood of Port-au-Prince. These self-trained sculptors are known for incorporating discarded materials into their works as well as human remains from the huge nearby cemetery, La Cimetière. The themes of urban decay, discarded modernity, and the cyclical nature of life and death are channeled through these haunting depictions of vodou deities.
