Creating a simple JUCE (purposely miss-spelt) Brand

These Badges were created for Class Three of the Adobe Education Exchange course for  Graphics & Illustration.

I found this week’s task a lot harder than the previous tasks. Mainly because it really pulled me out of my comfort zone. I use Illustrator mainly to draw and illustrate and rarely use it to work with fonts. That’s why I really wanted to make my logo purely out of a font and try to manipulate it as much as possible.

In order to get the most out of the assignment I decided to use a font from the Typekit suite to try and experiment with adding fonts into Illustrator. I came up with a simple concept idea of a juice brand, uncreatively named “JUICE”. I wanted the logo to actually contain a glass of juice so thought that a sans serif font would look best. I looked for a font that would look best for creating a simple glass shape. Acumin seems like the nicest and was very simplistic but looked easy to manipulate with simple lines.

I then wanted to not only manipulate the font, but the word itself. I wanted people to read what the word said but still be unique. I felt that by taking out the “I”, JUCE is still pronounced the same. I then wanted the logo to be as big as possible on the glass but to be easily read without rotating the cylinder. Therefore, I made the logo fit into a rectangular shape. I wanted the glass to be the most prominent shape on the design so stretched the J and U to fill the majority of the logo.

Using the pen tool, I created simple lines to create the actual glass, but realized that no matter how much detail I added, it resembled a beaker more than a glass. I researched pint glasses to find a shape which I thought would look cool, and then using the Direct Selection Tool to manipulate the U until I got the required shape. Once the logo looked correct, I tweaked the lines to make the font slightly thinner. I then warped it onto the glass bottle. With a slight arc to look 3D.
Hope you all enjoy my design :)
