book design

Recipient of the 2016 Design Award by Graphic Design USA

826NYC a nonprofit organization founded by best-selling author Dave Eggers, supports New York City's most underserved students, ages six to eighteen, with their creative and expository writing skills and is dedicated to helping teachers inspire their students to write. Its staff believes that great leaps in learning can happen with one-on-one attention and that strong writing skills are fundamental to future success.
The 826NYC Review No. 6, created in partnership with the NYCulture, is a collection of these students' work.

The design concept, inspired by the students and the vibrancy of 826NYC’s Superhero Supply Company, is a psychedelic take on the old-school marble composition notebook, stickered with characters—like Marlin, the evil Rhino—taken from the students' stories and poems.

Shadow
Written by Kaia M. L., age 7, as a personal submission for the 826NYC Review

My shadow was too dirty
‘til at last I had enough.
I stalked it...
and pounced...
I washed and scrubbed.
Then, where is it?
I threw black paint into the air
and saw something small and black
imitating me.
Oh no,
it is my shadow!
My shadow still follows me
wherever I go,
dripping black paint,
and if you want to find me,
follow the paint.

Consider appreciating the project below,
then head over to 826NYC and support
the great work they do!
