Nari Ward: Sugar Hill Smiles

— Sugar Hill Smiles | Nari Ward —

Nari Ward creates sculptural and performance installations composed of systematically collected material from urban neighborhoods. Taking a mobile canning cart into the streets of Sugar Hill Harlem, community members were invited to smile into the interior of one of 2,000 cans with an embedded mirror, which was then sealed shut. The project gave each participating member of the community a sense of individual expression that collectively formed a type of community portrait.

Working with the artist, the designed labels, with a gold and crimson color scheme, use a modified vintage typeface inspired by coffee tin designs from the 1940s.

Produced for No Longer Empty's exhibition If You Build It (2014).
