The Gladiator Original Film Score

As president of Universal Music Group’s Classics and Jazz division, Christopher “Chris” Roberts helped revive key jazz labels Deutsche Grammophon and Verve. During his tenure at Universal Music, Christopher Roberts also introduced new marketing opportunities through motion picture soundtracks, including scores for Gladiator.

Gladiator is a 2000 motion picture directed by Ridley Scott and starring Russell Crowe and Joaquin Phoenix. The film grossed nearly $460 million and took home five Academy Award trophies, including awards for Best Picture, Best Actor in a Leading Role, and Best Sound. The film’s soundtrack, composed by Hans Zimmer and Lisa Gerrard and performed by the Lyndhurst Orchestra, brought additional prestige to the movie.

The Gladiator score received widespread critical acclaim and went on to receive nominations at the Golden Globe Awards, the Academy Awards, and the BAFTA Awards. Zimmer and Gerrard took home the Golden Globe for Best Original Score in 2001, beating out original scores for All the Pretty Horses and Crouching Tiger, Hidden Dragon, among others.
