In my Jewelry Concepts course our last big project was metal casting. For this project we had to make casted silver rings using a cuttlefish bone as our mold. It was my first time casting and it took me three tries for me to successfully make a ring. I made the basic outline for my ring using 20 Gauge copper and carved into the cuttlefish bone using a pencil and a carving tool.

The first two times I had issues with the metal spilling out which indicated either: a.) I didn't bind the cuttlefish mold tight enough with the wire. b.) My little indentation to help prevent air bubbles extended too far. c.) a combination of both. Thankfully, the third time really is the charm and this is what came out of it.

After I casted this ring and put it in the pickle, I sanded and filed this ring of any rough edges, especially on the inside and then polished it.
With my third try the cuttlefish I used must have had different ingredients in it because it was much harder, it took me much longer to carve into and did not have the interesting striated pattern to it like the other cuttlefish bones did so as a result, there is no pattern on this ring.

Unfortunately, this ring is much too big on my finger but this project turned out to be really cool and fun. I love the multitude of effects and looks you can get using the cuttlefish bone.
