SUSPENSION OF DISBELIEF

an anthropological reportage about body suspension rituals

"The moment feet leave the ground, the world changes. It's just like, by breaking the link between body and soil, you could also get rid of a burden deeply rooted in human nature, completely changing your point of view on reality"

These are the words I chose to open the book I've been working on between 2009 and 2012. It's been a huge project, set between Italy, Norway, Croatia and Serbia. I spent three years travelling from one place to another, getting to know amazing people coming from all over the world and, most importantly, from cultural and emotional spaces that I couldn't even think of.

This book tells the story of my journey through rituals of body suspension, but above all it tells the story of those people that took my hand and showed me the way.

Queste sono le parole che ho scelto per aprire Suspension of Disbelief, il libro fotografico a cui ho lavorato tra il 2009 e il 2012. E' stato un progetto enorme, svoltosi tra Italia, Norvegia, Croazia e Serbia. Ho passato tre anni viaggiando da un posto all'altro, conoscendo persone incredibili, provenienti da tutto il mondo e, cosa più importante, da luoghi culturali ed emotivi dei quali non potevo nemmeno immaginare l'esistenza.

Questo libro parla del mio viaggio attraverso i rituali di sospensione corporale, ma soprattutto racconta la storia di quelle persone che mi hanno tenuto la mano e mostrato la strada durante il percorso.

Body suspension consists in, literally, hanging from metal hooks placed under the skin. As intense as it seems, the practice has a lot of ecstatic beauty within itself and most of the times it's peaceful and soothing.

La sospensione corporale consiste, letteralmente, nel sollevare un individuo attraverso ganci metallici inseriti sotto la pelle. Nonostante l'intrinseca intensità, la pratica è caratterizzata da una forte carica di bellezza estatica e, nella maggior parte dei casi, trasmette una grande serenità.

Rituals of body suspension come a long way from the past, some of them even predate written history. Their study is a complex task I faced with neutral eyes. The first time I got in front of a suspension I had no idea of how I would have reacted. And what happened was surprising, indeed.

I rituali di sospensione corporale non sono una scoperta recente, ma provengono da un lontano passato. Alcuni sono addirittura antecedenti alla storia scritta. Studiarli è stato un procedimento complesso, nel quale mi sono impegnato a mantenere uno sguardo neutrale. La prima volta che mi sono trovato di fronte a una sospensione, non avevo idea di come avrei reagito. E ciò che è successo è stato assolutamente sorprendente.

In three years I got from total ignorance to deep understending of what suspendees go through during suspension and why they develop that strong bond both with the practice itself and with other practicioners too.

In tre anni, sono passato dall'ignoranza totale a una profonda comprensione dell'esperienza vissuta da un sospeso e del motivo per il quale sviluppa un così forte legame sia con la pratica in sé che con gli altri sospesi.

What I learned from my journey has now become a book. Despite a lot of appreciation from the big names of the reportage industry, I didn't find a suitable publisher for the project, so I decided to do everything myself and i chose self publishing.

It's a hard choice indeed, but there's too much to show, to share and to tell.

On March 6th 2013, after a lot of work, Suspension of Disbelief is finally available for purchase as a photographic eBook on Lulu.com and it can be bought through its beautiful splash page on stefanomoscardini.it

Most of the informations regarding the book can be found on this Facebook Page. Facebook had a pivotal role in allowing me to get in touch both with leading figures in the suspension community and keeping all the people I knew around Europe close to me.

Tutto ciò che ho appreso, alla fine di questo viaggio, è diventato un libro. Nonostante abbia raccolto numerosi consensi fra i grandi nomi del mondo del reportage, non sono riuscito a trovare un editore adatto, e ho quindi deciso di optare per il self publishing.

E' stata una scelta indubbiamente difficile, ma c'erano troppe cose che meritavano di essere mostrate, raccontate e condivise.

Il 6 marzo 2013, dopo tanto lavoro, Suspension of Disbelief è uscito sotto forma di eBook fotografico su Lulu.com e può essere acquistato attraverso l'apposita splash page su stefanomoscardini.it
