The IMPRINTS, or energyscapes as referred to by Gutierrez, embody the darkness andthe light that coexist within each of us; revealing vortexes, dimensionalportals, dragons, and the energy imprints embodying the history of New Mexicovia the big sky. Michael states, “This is my love letter to the people of NewMexico and to the only place in my life I have ever called home.”

Using hissystematic HE-13 style of shooting, Gutierrez’ multi faceted images encompass avision all his own. In a recentinterview Gutierrez said, "In a time where most people, including myself, never look much further than our cell phones, we need reminders such as theIMPRINT series to reconnect with ourselves via the vastness of the New Mexico sky.” Michael also states,"As a universal idea, I was offered this series, and feel honored to havethe opportunity to share life in a new way.”

Artist Statement:

My obligation as an artist is to share the honest story of us through the medium of photography. I create art in order to connect with people, and through my work, help others connect with themselves, while reminding them that they are not alone. A continuous theme within all of my photographs is a feeling of loneliness and the prospect that we are all on a solo journey while denying ourselves the realization that each of us exist as the same universal energy.

The human element, usually represented by a single human form or a man made structure, is honored in all of my works. Within my photographs I inhibit the viewers natural inclination to connect directly with the character by any means necessary including blacking out their faces and presenting their backs to the camera. This creates what I call an Every Man, allowing the viewer, whether male or female, to become a part of the story while making a direct connection within their self. The importance of this connection is to recognize ones self in others, as both the light and dark dualities in humanity. When you recognize these dualities you can truly see beauty in all things recognizing that imperfection is perfection.

Sticking by my mantra, No limits. Push your medium forward, I refused to limit the means by which I would create. In order to give my work continuity recognized by viewers throughout the span of my career, I created my own system of shooting called HE-13. HE signifies the Human Element, while 13 represents the systematic rhythm for which I set up each shot.

My deep admiration for New Mexico's big sky inspired my current series, IMPRINT. These photographs are not merely cloudscapes; they are energyscapes. A closer look reveals dimensional portals, vortexes, and the life energy that coexist within the vast New Mexico sky. They also serve as an artistic historical record of New Mexico as told by these energyscapes. Imprint is my most prolific series to date, with over 150 photos thus far.
