Aftermath Homestead

2014, various plastics, reused materials, plants, water
Aftermath homestead is the combination of my interest in ecological issues and a fair amount of myth-making and science fiction. The idea of environmental destruction fuels a dystopian future society, implicating the viewer into its way of life. Both familiar (through fictional and non-fictional tropes) and alien, Aftermath Homestead is a glimpse into an unwelcome future, a warning bell, and a work of fiction with a hint of truth. It is that recognizable truth, that familiarity that is critical to this piece.
The Aftermath world is building itself up using the waste of the previous culture (ours). Displayed here is one aspect of Aftermath society, the Regional Office: through the basics of survival, and an indication of governmental organization, the viewer begins to understand my mythologized culture. With contaminated soil and water, environmental disaster is implied, and the use of recognizable logos ties this dystopian dead world
to our own. It is meant to be a possible future, a culture that could come to exist, a daunting, somewhat terrifying prospect.
