Publication Re-Design
One of my first assignments at August Home Publishing was a complete redesign & update to ShopNotes magazine from front to back cover, including content and new departments. The magazine had not been updated since its introduction in 1992. After the redesign newsstand sales increased significantly and continues to rise. Since the overhaul in 2004 it was my responsibility to keep ShopNotes up to date with current newsstand industry trends.
Problem: Covers lacked a template, photo looks flat and has an orange cast, too many font styles & color, no kerning & leading, type overall too hard to read. Contents page unbalanced.
Solution: Template created for covers, photo full bleed and edited to create a stronger visual impact, paper changed to glossy stock. ShopNotes logo updated. Contents now balanced and works as a complete spread. Masthead (imprint) moved.

Problem: Layout does not follow a template, copy column width random, too many multi-direction drop shadows, unclear what department you are in, extras box conflicts with rest of layout, photos have an orange cast, illustration is close to gutter, too many font styles.
Solution: Template created for all layouts, illustrations moved out of gutter area, extras box now works with the template column guides.
