Captive Prince Title Sequence

OVERVIEW
As a final project for the Time-Based Typography course at SCAD, I created a mock title sequence based on Captive Prince by C. S. Pacat.

Captive Prince by is a historical gay romance series with a focus on political intrigue and deception. Two countries have warred for generations, like the black and white pieces of a chessboard. After the suspicious deaths of the kings, however, it becomes clear that the rules of the game have changed. The two princes of these rival countries must come together to reclaim their thrones and countries from the usurpers who seek to depose them.

CONCEPT
The immediate imagery representing the series are the games of war, chess and checkers. In both games there are two opposing forces which battle to elimination, with special regard to a "king" piece. In chess, the king is fragile. His movements are limited, and should he fall, so will his kingdom. In checkers, however, the crowned pieces are the most powerful and maneuverable, and are created by battling through the opponent's pieces to reach the other side of the board.

In regards to the Captive Prince series the initial impression is that the two countries are playing the game of chess. It is eventually revealed that betrayers have successfully and secretly played a game of checkers instead, resulting in the fall of the rightful kings by their own trusted forces. The title shows the progression of this game of kings through the expansion of red, a color from checkers, through the black-and-white battlefield of chess, creating a three-sided battle in a two-sided game.
