EMERGENCY AND RECOVERY TROLLEY

A project in collaboration with Godrej Interio (Healthcare department), a leading interiors and healtcare company in India. The task was to conduct user-centered research studies and develope new methods of analysis to understand the healthcare section. Godrej wanted to launch their emergency and recovery trolley designed for prompt and safe transport of the patient, which also allows for diagnosis and treatment of a patient in critical condition, on the stretcher.

PRODUCT FUNCTION
Patient diagnosis and first aid are done on the emergency and recovery trolley, and is also used for post- trauma recovery. Diagnosis is the identification of the nature of any problem, for which assessing the most basic body functions, vital signs are an essential. Vital signs normally entails recording body temperature, pulse rate (or heart rate), blood pressure, and respiratory rate. First aid is the provision of initial care for an illness or injury. Patient is transferred from emergency department to the ICU or hospital ward.

ACTIVITY MODEL
A field visit was conducted in 4 hospitals and after weeks of shadowing and interviewing healthcare workers, a model of “who, what, when, where” of patient transfer activities was made.

EMERGENCY DEPARTMENT
An emergency department (ED), also knwon as emergency room (ER), is a medical treatment facility specializing in acute care of patients. Due to the unplanned nature of patient attendance, the department must provide initial treatment for a broad spectrum of illnesses and injuries, some of which may be life-threatening and require immediate attention. Most of the emergency departments have 4-5 emergency and recovery trolleys. Patient monitors are placed next to some emergency and recovery trolleys.

CURRENT PRODUCT
In India, the leading brands for medical equipment is Janak and Medimek. Their trolleys are priced at INR 45,000. Research proved that both of them had their own issues.

The possibility of X-ray scanning on the stretcher reduces the time for diagnostics.

CPR (Cardio Pulmonary Resuscitation) is a very commonly used procedure in the emergency department. RAPID rests on four linkages making it highly stable.

MOCK UP
A 1:5 working mock up was made to investigate proportions and major parts of the emergency and recovery trolley. The mock up enabled us to test the design, understand the functionality of the design, verified the product's ergonomics to an extent and also proved out the design's visual statement.
