Wood Grain Risk Board

This piece was created as a fun but elaborate version of the board game. I wanted to create the board so that it could be played using the original pieces and rules, but on a board with more dimension.

I wanted to use different kinds of wood with very different colours for each distinctive continental region and later decided to include a frame and compartments to hold game pieces.

Using the original Risk board to trace out stencils for each territory and continent. These were then etched onto prepared planks of wood. Once stenciled, I used a scroll saw to cut out the shapes of the continents. Using a wood-burning tool, I traced out the borders of each territory within each continent.

A frame was constructed including a backboard that was stained blue. The frame itself was given grooves to allow a slim cover to slide over the compartments, and prevent pieces from being lost.

The continents were glued to the backboard using wood glue and large weights. The weights were used since there was no effective way to clamp them in place in the middle of the board. Holes were drilled in the back of each continent to create a space underneath for glue to seep in to. This reduced the amount of glue being pushed out to the edges of the continents.

Some of the types of wood used in this project include:
-Imbuya
-Purple Heart
-Red Heart
-Yellowheart
-Zebrawood
-Maple
