"A Point ofLight" is a collection of my pinhole photography work from the time I wasfirst a student at the New Brunswick College of Craft and Design in 2005 tillmy re-enrolment in 2011. It represents 6 years of personal study in the art ofpinhole photography and the wonders that the random and unpredictable resultsof the technic can produce.
These images were selected as having personal interestregarding the place, color or lighting I feel need to be documented for thefuture. The nature of the pinhole camera is that it sees the world"unfiltered" compared to most camera equipment. It may be the casethat the places in the images no longer exist, or that the conditions in whichthe subjects are lit may never happen quite the same way again. In the case ofthe night images, long exposer times can often generate some beautiful andinteresting effects, which this format translates very well. Capturing in the images in this very dreamy,foggy state, I feel, greatly adds to the draw of the image. The way certain colorsappear also has great appeal and presence in my mind.
As what we think as a regular photograph today, the imagemay not stand, but having this unfiltered light, this wide, low view and beingshot with 35mm film, gives an indefinite directive that this is somethingimportant or interesting and needs to be captured for all time. This series was created using 3 differentpinhole modified 35mm disposable cameras; each camera produces a differentimage, due to design and size of the pinhole. The images were scanned and dustand dirt was removed and color and exposer was corrected via Photoshop. Noother additions or subtractions were preformed; the images are, as they are onthe negative. The process is as close to the "darkroom experience" asone can get with modern software and hardware.
The idea behind this series will be to share my greatestdiscoveries working with the medium with the public and hope that people findthis process and outcome as beautiful and amazing as I do.
