Foundation Drawing: Self Portrait

Intro

For this project I had to create a self portrait of myself that could be an interpretation of myself that may be literal or not in density controlled ink. The idea of this project is to choose a way to how you want to portray yourself that may tell about yourself or something that tells about an interest you find intriguing, but the main objective of this project is to be able to capture the grey scale value through the use of just inking to capture highlights and shadows.

Prep

The materials I used to make and prepare for the project in a list format:
1.) felt tip pens
2.) pencils
3.) eraser
4.)tracing paper
5.) bond paper
6.) 15 x 20" hot press board for my final rendering of the inked portrait.

Before I got to inking, I had to come up with some ideas on how I wanted to interpret myself so I created some thumbnails of ideas that interested that would help to list them and later on decide on the one that I liked the most.
Once I chose one of the ideas I made I printed the reference photo to black and white to help clarify the values of the portrait using ink.
After drawing some ideas I chose one that I liked and did a comp idea in ink to get the idea of what it will look like through various inking techniques that I wanted to apply for certain areas of my portrait that must be done carefully in how much I space them out or how much I should condense them with different size pens.
After working on my rough inking I had to make some surface studies and practice on them to figure out how much improvement and touch ups I had to apply in terms of value  of the sizing of the pens before I could move on to doing the final work on a 15 x 20" hot press board.
To creating the final rendering, I first outlined the picture with a pencil, coloured the back so that it would transfer on to the hot press board and then place the tracing I made on to the board and by retracing the same outline it would transfer over with in a light manner that can be easily erased after once its finished.
Final Image

Here we are, to the final step once I finished my surfaces studies and traced a light outline to improve it enough to be able to work on the final rendering in an 11 x 14 frame on a 15 x20 hot press board using a lot of stippling, hatching, and other variety inking techniques in a density manner to mainly capture the values of the portrait with no outlining in ink.
