The art of Gourd Carving is something very special and unique to the people of Peru. It has been a method of storytelling and craft that is passed down to each generation as an oral tradition.
The art of gourd carving has been practiced in Peru for more than 40,000 years, with artisans using gourds, or mates burilados, to tell both communal and personal stories.
The creation of this brochure was influenced by the 2015 Smithsonian Folklife Festival that featured Peru that year.
