Material Matters

DESCRIPTION:
Material Matters was a three-day intensive design andprototyping workshop held in New York City the weekend of May 21-23, 2011.

Material Matters examined the procedural distinctionsbetween two modes of design production: the first relying primarily on cerebralprocessing (a conceptual domain isolated from the wildness of matter andenergy) and the second motivated by material’s capacity to act as an agent inthe discovery of form. The workshop operated through a framework ofcomputational, parametric, and fabrication strategies that hinge on thepeculiarities of material and the emergent set of knowledge associated with thework of the hand. Participants developed multiple instances of parametric prototypesrepresented in digital as well as fabricated output.

The format of the workshop included daily instructional, design, and fabrication sessions and was conducted in a fast-paced and hands-onstudio environment. Technical content was delivered via the plug-ins Grasshopper and Rhinocam for Rhino3D. Participants haddirect access to digital fabrication equipment including: an industrial CNC3-axis Mill and CNC High-Force Cutter. An optional third workshop day wasoffered to those participants who desired further time to develop and prototypetheir projects.

As part of a larger online infrastructure, modeLab, the workshop provided participantswith continued support and knowledge to draw upon for future learning.
