Ships At A Distance - Storyboard & Styleframes

Storyboard & Styleframs based upon this passage from Their Eyes Were Watching God.

“Ships at a distance have every man’s wish on board. For some they come in with the tide. For others they sail forever on the same horizon, never out of sight, never landing, until the Watcher turns his eyes away in resignation, his dreams mocked to death by time. That is the life of men. Now, women forget all those things they don’t want to remember, and remember everything they don’t want to forget. The dream is the truth. Then they act and do things accordingly.”
-Zora Neale Hurston
Their Eyes Were Watching God

This passage talks about dreams. Men create dreams for themselves. Some of their dreams fail and others just let their dreams go. Men realize their dreams will not happen and let their dreams go. Women are careful with the dreams they create. Their dream be- comes their guide. Women hold their dreams close and never let them go.

The ocean imagery in the passage is mimicked in the styleframes. The painterly style and soft brushstrokes create the feeling of a dream. The ships represent men’s dreams and the collected items on the beach represent women’s dreams.
