Nathan Palmer's profile

A Brief History of Briefs

For this project I was supposed to create a timeline documenting the history or progression of a series of events or design modifications I love a product or object. To avoid the usual clichés and projects that would be duplicates of other artists, to look at a project that was highlighting an object that was so bizarre and so often neglected that it would be rare and unusual to have presented in a timeline format. This brought me to—if you can imagine—underwear.

Underwear has been under there for more than 7,000 years, but no matter how persistently humanity tries to keep it under wraps, underwear is a part of fashion, history, and life. This timeline explores the undie overhauls that have brought us into the modern age.
The completed poster, a full 42 inches long and 14 inches tall.
This is a detail shot of the boxers by themselves to show the pattern and illustrative style.
This is a closeup of the corset to show the detail in the lace especially.
Here's a detail shot of the briefs.
Here's detail of the bra and the boxer shorts.
