Rao Chalasani's profile

Blindness in India - The Sankara Eye Found.

An experienced financial services professional and resident of New Jersey, Rao Chalasani most recently served as the chief technology officer and the director of trading, risk management, and business for Bank of America’s New York, NY, office. Apart from his career with financial institutions such as BofA, Rao Chalasani supports a number of international charities, including the Sankara Eye Foundation.

Founded in 1998, the nonprofit Sankara Eye Foundation is committed to eliminating all cases of curable blindness in India by 2020 through its support of its partner organization, the Sankara Eye Foundation, India, which was founded in 1977. From its headquarters in Milpitas, California, the foundation supports nine Indian community care eye facilities and eye care programs ranging from a rural outreach program to a school program dedicated to preventative care. In 2014 alone, SEF provided more than 1.25 million free surgeries for glaucoma and cataracts, among other curable causes of blindness.

To achieve its goals, the Sankara Eye Foundation relies on the support of donors and volunteers. Further, the foundation provides opportunities for summer and longer-term internships. SEF’s internship opportunities are divided into three specific areas: clinical internships, observerships, and volunteering internships. Interns serve at hospitals in Anand, Bangalore, Coimbatore, Guntur, and Shimoga. Although the two- to eight-week clinical volunteering internships are open to high school students and adults without medical backgrounds, the other two are for medical residents or public health administrators. All internships involve working with people in need and making a lasting difference in patients’ lives.
