After my partner finished connecting one button and we got it working... they disconnected the whole thing and began working on the next project, instead of connecting more buttons. 
 
The next week (October 9th) I had to try to solve the project myself, although it was due that same day. The result? A non-functional project.

Now using code from here... and the sketch below: 
It uploaded fine... but it does not work, at all. Even with the changes to the code from the forum, I will need to work on this further for it to be working the way I would like it to.
Even tried connecting it a different way, similar to my original sketch...
