Perspectives: A Handmade Paper Book

The idea behind this book arose from my interest in comparing and analyzing the two different cultures that I have experienced: American & Indian. To understand and compare the cultural, social and other differences between the two countries I interacted with people from both the countries. A set of questions were asked for people to express their thoughts on all these aspects. The idea was to understand people's perspectives as shaped by generalizing thoughts that have existed for a long time. The results obtained from interacting with different people were then put in this book as excerpts.

The book uses handmade paper and two different materials were used for the pulp of this book, representing the different countries. The pages in the book are divided in three categories using three different styles to represent thoughts of Americans on India, thoughts of Indians on United States of America and the thoughts of people who have lived in both India and USA. Using two different pulps that represented each country allowed me to connect the outcome to the subject. Making the paper where the two different pulp was mixed showcased the idea of a mix of the two cultures. Every paper is handmade, including the stencil of the countries' outlines and then text is printed on it. The binding too was done by hand resulting in a hand bound accordion fold book.
